Domestic violence suspects end up in cuffs

The City’s enforcement services arrested 267 suspects and recorded 69 432 traffic and by-law offences in the past week. Metro Police officers also had their hands full, with numerous arrests relating to domestic violence.
Metro Police Officers confiscated various quantities of drugs including cocaine with an estimated street value of R10 000, tik, mandrax and heroin, cash, and an imitation firearm.
They also made 67 arrests in the past week and issued 3 266 traffic and by-law fines.
Officers responded to at least eight domestic violence incidents, making five arrests in four separate incidents.
On Friday, 8 November, at approximately 20:10, officers responded to a complaint in Somerset West. They arrested a 21-year-old male for Verbal Abuse and Intimidation against his mother, under the Domestic Violence Act. He was detained at Somerset West SAPS.
On Thursday, 7 November, at around 20:20, officers arrested a 31-year-old suspect for being in contempt of a court order. The complainant called for help, as the suspect had violated a court-issued interdict.
On Wednesday, 6 November, at approximately 09:30, officers were on patrol in Cafda, when a woman stopped them and confirmed that she was in possession of a protection order for two people who were trespassing on her premises. Officers detained two suspects, aged 29 and 35.
On Monday, 4 November, at 09:00, officers attended a domestic violence incident in Parkwood. They arrested a 23-year-old man for malicious damage to property, crimen injuria, intimidation, and resisting arrest. The suspect was detained at Grassy Park SAPS.
‘Our Metro Police Department responds to a fair number of domestic violence complaints, but it’s not always the case that they’re able to put the perpetrators in cuffs, as many flee the scene, or the complainants decide not to lay charges. These arrests are a timely reminder of just how pervasive domestic violence is, often exacerbated by substance abuse. The annual 16 days campaign for no violence against women and children is around the corner. Ensuring a consistent enforcement response is key, but I also want to remind persons living with abuse to apply for protection orders and anything else the law offers, for their safety and that of their loved ones,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

Law Enforcement officers made 160 arrests in the past week, and issued 2 264 notices for various by-law offences.
LEAP officers also confiscated five firearms – two of them in Gugulethu.
On Sunday, 10 November, officers arrested a suspect for possession of a prohibited firearm in Hanover Park
On Thursday, 7 November at 15:50, officers arrested a suspect for the illegal possession of a firearm and 11 rounds of ammunition in Philippi
On the same day, officers recovered a firearm and four rounds of ammunition in Gugulethu. They arrested a 22-year-old man
On Wednesday, 6 November, officers arrested three suspects in Gugulethu and recovered a 9mm pistol
On Monday, 4 November, the Elsies River Reaction Unit arrested a suspect and retrieved an illegal 9mm pistol and eight rounds of ammunition
Traffic officers made 40 arrests - 27 were for driving under the influence of alcohol, four for reckless and negligent driving and nine for other transgressions. Offices also recorded 63 902 offences, executed 1 967 warrants of arrest and impounded 285 public transport vehicles.
